It's Not Punishment
You can look at something you are experiencing as punishment, or you can look at it as an opportunity to grow stronger in your faith and grow closer to Him. The former goes hand in hand with the belief that God is a punishing God and the latter goes hand in hand with a God who is Love. Out of Love, we are given experiences so that we can shed false beliefs about ourselves and God. When we do that, when we release that which is false, what is left is what is Real --- God.
