What Is "Enlightenment"?
The word enlightenment has become misinterpreted and misused. Too many people chase this concept in order to escape from what they see as their problems. It is another ego strategy.
A better description than enlightened is becoming fully awake to your Unity with God and the Love that you are. For the ego wants to escape or put up walls while your Spirit is already in complete joy, peace, and Love. So it is not enlightenment you are seeking but a return to Love and Unity in your recognition and remembrance.
How do you achieve this? You can want to return to what is already inside you, and you can also be pushed by the desire to be free of guilt, fear, shame, anger, self judgment, resentment, bitterness, pride, self pity, etc. Because you know these are not your true nature and they don't make you feel good, you want to heal and elevate your consciousness above them.
A strong desire to change must be accompanied by a strong will and willingness to work hard, because this journey requires that you constantly examine and release false beliefs, and there can be great resistance to that. It takes great diligence and a warrior attitude to look at your fears, your resentments, your dysfunctional patterns. You must look at them and release them without self judgment.
It takes patience and the knowledge that God only has your highest good and there is a light at the end of the tunnel. And a deep longing for communion with and a return to God will take you a long way.
